The case of a static site
Let’s take a simple example to get started. A dynamic site created with a CMS (for example created with WordPress, Joomla, Drupal or any software ecommerce) must generate the HTML code of the page every time a user visits the page. This involves performing a number of calculations and queries on the database (and therefore a consumption of resources). In the case of a static HTML site, the server does not have to do any of these calculations, since the pages are already in HTML on the server. So the only limiting factor will be the monthly traffic. If your pages weigh 1MB each and your account offers a monthly traffic of 20GB your users will be able to view 20,000 pages every month before reaching the limit.
If you want to increase the number of supported users per month it will be necessary to reduce the weight of the page, since it is a simple mathematical calculation.
What if I use a dynamic site instead?
If you’re using a CMS (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal or other) on your shared hosting, the situation changes. In this case the server must generate the HTML code for each page visited by your users. Also, you are definitely using plugins (or components) on your site that perform additional calculations. In this case not only monthly traffic is used for each page visited (as in the example above of static site). To perform these calculations we will use server resources such as CPU, RAM, IO and processes. Shared hosting plans provide the necessary resources for a medium-sized site. You can see the limits in our price table.
It is impossible to calculate beforehand how many resources a website might consume, since resource consumption depends on the number of plugins and what they do. If you want to increase the number of supported monthly visitors in this case you can act by reducing the number of plugins and using a cache plugin (which saves HTML code to disk in order to limit the workload on the server).
In conclusion, it is not possible to define beforehand how many resources your website will consume and then how many visits it will be able to support. Our advice is to take a plan that seems suitable to you (or contact us to get our opinion on how many visits your website will have) and in case you need to move to a higher plan in the future, you can do it by paying only the difference.
