You may all have seen the 500 error while trying to access a website. If – on the other hand – you happened to see it today for the first time, here are some of our tips and explanations.
Error 500, why it happens and how to solve it
The error 500 appears when browsing internet, just before fully accessing a website: it is an error generated if the site has a crash: it does not depend on the use of a specific browser or a specific operating system. It can happen whether you use Mozilla Firefox but also in the case of Google Chrome; but also in the case of Windows 7, Linux or Windows 10.
When we say that error 500 is “their problem” we mean that this error does not depend in any way on the client, but on the site or the server.
But what are the main reasons for this error?
First, it may be that the server is in overload; but also that there was a error in the configuration (this means that even a single grammatical error in the .htaccess can generate the error 500); or to various code problems on the CMS or to small issues related to allowed files, but also to missed folders!
How to resolve error 500?
Soon done: we ask advice to the hosting provider; if we are a bit more experienced you can also return the site to the condition before the appearance of the error (maybe uninstalling the last plugin) or you can analyse the last entries in the system log.
If instead you are using a VPS, then you can proceed directly with a debug on PHP, with the verification of the LOG, with the test of the activity of the server, and much more.
Here are the most common messages that will appear on the screen of your electronic device when you reveal the 500 error:
